Facebook & Advertisements

I'm planning to add 3 things to the app and I'd like some community feedback before moving forward.

* Google Analytics
* Facebook "like" link
* Advertising

None of these features will improve the app from a user perspective. However, they will allow me to understand the community better and add a few things to my resume. Let's look at each of these individually...

Google Analytics:
This should allow me to understand the usage of the app. Currently I do not have any visibility into the number of users or how often the app is being used. Understanding volumes will motivate me to continue development.

Facebook:
I want to have more interaction with the community using the application. I want to get user feedback for roadmap items and bugs. Currently there are only 10 people that like this app on Facebook. Building that community will benefit that application, site, and hopefully connect rowers.

Advertisements:
Let's face it, money is a good motivator. With some funds rolling in from marketers I'll have some incentive to improve the app. This may be a slight inconvenience to the user, but it will help get features added.

Feel free to give me feedback. Either via the contact form or replying to this thread. I love hearing from the community.

Wildfire is working!

I finally got ahold of a used HTC Wildfire and figured out the issue. I had somehow created a new layout for small screen devices, but didn't update it. So, when devices with small displays opened the app is crapped it's pants. The update addressed this issue and I removed the PayPal stuff from the app.

Valencell HRM

I met the team from Valencell at CTIA today. They are producing a BlueTooth stereo headset for Android/iPhone/WinMo that also tracks vital signs. The devices should be released in Best Buy be the beginning of 2012. I'm hoping to get my hands on one and the SDK to integrate into And/Oar.

And/Oar != HTC Wildfire

I received a report from a potential user that And/Oar does not work on an HTC Wildfire. I checked the Android publisher site and it appears there are many users experience this issue with HTC devices, although only the Wildfire model was called out.

I need to find a way to get my hands on one of these devices to troubleshoot the issue. As is stands I have tested the app on 3 HTCs and the app was developed on an HTC. I just don't have access to a HTC Wildfire for testing.

8 Week Hiatus

Epoxy & Glass Interior from orange on Vimeo.

After 8 weeks of distractions I have made it out to the boat again and have about 4 work days left to complete the hull. After that I have to wait until further notice from Graeme to finish the plans for the ribbing and cockpit. The video is composed of work that started on 4/30 with the center of the boat. Then the bow work on 5/7 and finally the stern work on 7/2.

The work consisted of applying fiberglass and epoxy to the interior of the hull. This was much more time consuming than the exterior because of the concave surface. So far the interior has been incredibly challenging due to the shape. Applying glass and epoxy is challenging on this surface because is it difficult to get the fiber glass to lay correctly in the bottom. The best method I've found is to start at the bottom and slowly work your way up the sides. As the epoxy is applied it tends to pull the fiber glass with the applicator causing the glass to pull up or make bubbles. It takes a fair bit of time to work the epoxy into the glass so that the glass is applied evenly and smooth.

The next items on the list are... apply one more coat of epoxy to the cockpit area. Sand the entire interior. This will complete the hull. However there is a small crack in the keel on the exterior. It will take another 2 or 3 days to complete work on the keel. The steps are to sand down the damaged area. Apply a small swath of fiberglass and epoxy. Sand and apply epoxy until smooth with rest of hull.

I hope to put some significant time into adding new features in June.

Demo Video

Here's the demo video I made for the PayPal developer challenge. It had to around 2 minutes so there is a lot going on in the clip.

Translators Needed

There are some newish reports for apps on the Android market. The report for And/Oar indicates And/Oar is liked around the world. Therefore, I need some translations. Can anyone oblige? Send me a message via the contact form and I'll send you the text sheet that needs translating.

Translations needed are Dutch, German, French, Spanish & Japanese.

She's comin' along. Have a few modifications to make so she fits the end of the boat better. Probably another 2 months before this project is done.
